Civic Projects
Ted Spencer initiated our firm’s involvement in the design of buildings for public use with an early commission for the Saratoga Village Library. The project was described by Jeanette Spencer in her unpublished biography of Ted as follows:
“Although the building was small, it was characterized by the spatial simplicity and the strong feeling for sculptural form which Ted imparted to all of his buildings.”
In recognition of this beloved structure, the community of Saratoga hired Spencer Associates fifty years later to design a much larger county library at a nearby location.
In addition to these projects, Spencer Associates has designed numerous civic
facilities throughout the Bay Area. These have included civic centers, libraries, visitor centers,
parks, and master plans for community expansion and beautification. Representative clients have
included the cities of Palo Alto, Mountain View, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Saratoga, Los Gatos,
Fremont, Santa Cruz, and Vacaville.
